In the intricate and often opaque world of national security, the U.S. government has a long history of taking extreme measures to safeguard the nation’s interests. Among the most controversial of these measures is the suppression of entire fields of science and technology—actions justified under the banner of national security but fraught with ethical, economic, and intellectual peril. By sequestering critical areas of science, mathematics, and technology and imposing secrecy orders over patents, the government risks stifling innovation, limiting scientific progress, and ultimately undermining the very security it seeks to protect.
